On a Thursday evening in September , eight Green Bay police officers and two state agents raided the Cheyenne Social Club, a renovated boarding house on South Broadway. Operators of the month-old business defended it as simply a members-only singles-bar, a place where traveling salesmen could enjoy hot food and a homelike atmosphere or couples could enjoy a romantic getaway on their wedding anniversary. But the police suspected otherwise. Maybe it was the mirrored ceilings in the bedrooms, the pornographic videos offered on the TV and the fact that the place shared the name of fictional brothel featured in a western. And, too, it was owned by William Evers, whom police long suspected as being a sort of local godfather in a Fox Valley-based organized crime network. At the time of the raid, Evers already had been convicted of setting fire to similar, competing businesses in the area. Eventually, he also would be accused of physically threatening competitors, trying to run over one of his former managers and trying to sell a prostitute's baby so she could keep working for him without having to hire a babysitter.
